Why Do Kids Love Dinosaurs?

Normally on this blog, I try to share some interesting new thing I’ve learned about science.  Today, I have a question.  Why do kids love dinosaurs?  The answer might give us a clue about how to get kids interested in science.

My guess is that kids like words that end in -est.  Biggest, tallest, strongest…  Maybe it has something to do with being so little.  Maybe kids admire dinosaurs because they want to grow up to be the biggest, tallest, and strongest themselves.

When I was a kid, my favorite dinosaur was the Plesiosaurus.  It had flippers instead of feet, and in my mind that made it the weirdest.  I’m not sure what that says about me.

Anyway, what’s your theory?  Why do you think children love dinosaurs?

I don’t think my kid “loves them” exactly.. but maybe it has something to do with the fact that they are extinct.. its something cool that’s old (older than Mommy and Daddy) and they can’t see anymore, that makes um kinda cool and special. You can see a dog, a cat, or a giraffe anywhere…

I don’t think that kids realize that dinosaurs are extinct because my 4.5 years old boy still looking for the dangerous zoo, i am really confused why my son and maybe other boys love those scary meet eating dinosaurs with strong teeth and that include some of living animals like crocodiles and tigers. in the last 3 years i am separated with his mom, is family situations and dinosaur cartoons, did something, where they coming to him while he sleeps alone, was it because his dad wasn’t with him most of time, only mom and babysitter. I don’t know.
